All’inizio c’è stata un’idea.

Premetto che abito da sempre in una città in cui è facile che vengano idee simili. Qui a Rimini ogni cosa è più o meno consciamente intrisa di ricordi felliniani.

E non sono solo  atmosfere o personaggi che puoi incontrare, ma ci si mettono e moltiplicano anche rassegne, incontri, nomi delle strade, immagini sui tabelloni o etichette della birra a tentarti con l’amarcord, sì, io a quell’epoca non ero ancora nata, ma comunque sì, mi ricordo.

Mi ricordo e non so nemmeno in quale occasione mi è capitato di ascoltare la voce dell’avvocato Titta (amico d’infanzia celebrato in Amarcord) raccontare della speciale relazione di Federico con la madre, che quand’era bambino gli aveva regalato un teatrino di cartone con cui il piccolo burattinaio intratteneva i compagni al prezzo di un soldo.

A questo frammento biografico, che mi si è imposto con la forza di un’immagine, ne ho istintivamente accostata una seconda, quella di Pinoccho che il primo giorno di scuola sentendo pifferi e rulli di tamburo cambia percorso per vedere lo spettacolo dei burattini.

Detto fatto. Federico-Pinocchio, Pinocchio-Federico i due grandi bugiardi, sono diventati all’istante un solo personaggio, il protagonista della storia che andavo immaginando.

Avevo letto chissà dove che Pinocchio fu il primo libro di Federico, che per lui prima di Pinocchio i libri non erano altro che oggetti misteriosi appartenenti alla libreria paterna e che solo leggendo le avventure di quel burattino di legno pieno di paure ma attraversato dal costante desiderio di una moralità più compiuta aveva scoperto che potevano non solo raccontare storie ma anche…parlare direttamente alla nostra anima!

Se leggi non sarai mai solo!

Sono seguite nuove letture e spunti.

In un’intervista Federico Felini aveva raccontato- ma non tutti i suoi racconti sono veri- di essere scappato di casa all’età di sette anni per andare a vedere il circo in piazza Malatesta e che i suoi genitori, disperati, l’avevano cercato fino a mezzanotte.

E poi le dichiarazioni:

Per me il cinema è come un circo vuoto, uno spazio da riempire, un mondo da creare

Mi sembra di vivere in un eterno presente in cui passato e futuro sono la stessa cosa

E io quel pinocchietto di legno l’avevo subito immaginato perso nella nebbia di Rimini, talmente perso da farsi rivelare il proprio nome da  Arlecchino e Pulcinella , ovvero da Federico, che nascosto dietro il teatrino muove i loro fili.

Poi ho scarabocchiato e scritto.

E mentre scrivevo, mi sembrava di avvicinarmi a quella “Biografia Immaginaria”, intrisa di menzogna e memorie, in cui episodi inventati e contraddizioni convivono con la disinvoltura del ricordo.

E mentre scarabocchiavo, la mente mi s’affollava d’immagini, anche se non sapevo esattamente cos’avrei tirato fuori da questo testo. Un libro illustrato? un fumetto?oppure...

Forse niente.

Poi un giorno mi sono ritrovata sulla mail la comunicazione di un premio letterario, il PremioSardegna. C’era una sezione per testi inediti, così senza riflettere troppo, ho fatto le copie richieste, l’ho inviato e ha vinto.

Questo mi ha dato il coraggio di proporre un testo un po’ diverso dal solito albo a Kite Edizioni, il

coraggio necessario all’impegno, al timore, alla scommessa di illustrarlo.

Madame Olga est aveugle mais malgré cela elle aime préparer des délicieux diner pour les invitées qui viennent la voir chaque soir. This Year  Grimm Press won the  Bologna Prize for the Best Children’s Publishers of the Year of Asia!

In ten years I have written and illustrated six titles for them and they also printed other two books I did with Abrams Books and Michael Neugebauer.

He boasted he could run faster than anyone else, and he wanted to challenge everyone he met in this vast 
forest. The Hare was really concerned about the quality of the race, so he usually felt disappointed 

with his competitors.

First I would like to thank the person who invited me to the  blog tour #mywritingprocess, second I would like to excuse myself for the worse English I’ve used to accomplish this request… or the opposite?

Per prima cosa vorrei ringraziare la persona che mi ha invitata al blog tour #mywritingprocess e come seconda scusarmi per il pessimo inglese con cui adempio a questa richiesta… o viceversa?

Let’s do that:  first I would like to thank the author-illustrator Francesca Chessa and as a second thing I will add an Italian translation of my English mistakes along with the roughs of my new book “The Most Beautiful Smile” (just released from Grimm Press TW) so that putting together the three languages you can succeed to get an idea of what I’m going to say when I start to reply to the first question:

Facciamo così: per prima cosa ringrazierò l’autrice-illustratrice  Francesca Chessa e come seconda inserirò una traduzione Italiana degli strafalcioni Inglesi assieme agli schizzi del libro “The Most Beautiful Smile” uscito pochi mesi fa con la casa Editrice Grimm Press di Taiwan, così che mettendo insieme questi tre linguaggi possiate avere un’idea quantomeno vaga di quel che vado dicendo quando incomincio a rispondere alla prima domanda:

WHAT AM I WORKING ON?

This is an easy question: right now I am intensely working to a personal project that will be be published by Kite Edizioni in Italy and Passpartout in France next November. But at the moment I’m not going to show roughs or searches of it as I am going to do that with a more detailed explanations in a next post.

A COSA STO LAVORANDO?

Questa è una domanda semplice: in questo momento sto intensamente lavorando a un progetto personale che uscirà con Kite Edizioni in Italia e Passpartout in Francia il prossimo Novembre, ma per il momento non metterò online schizzi o ricerche poiché mi riprometto di farlo in un prossimo post con una spiegazione più dettagliata.

HOW DOES MY WORK DIFFER FROM OTHERS OF ITS GENRE?This is an hard question instead as I don’t feel it’s up to me to define the stylistic characteristics  of my work. I may simply say that in the years my stories have approached different topics, following the curiosities or my peculiar searches at that time. If I have to point out a shared characteristic I would say that what I've put on all of them is that surreal touch that always come along with me, even in real life!

IN COSA IL MIO LAVORO DIFFERISCE DA ALTRI DELLO STESSO GENERE? Questa è una domanda complicata invece, perché non mi sembra spetti a me identificare caratteristiche stilistiche nel mio lavoro. Potrei semplicemente dire  che negli anni le mie storie hanno approcciato  tematiche  differenti , rispondendo a curiosità o ricerche del momento. Se dovessi indicare un “comune denominatore” direi che  ciò che le caratterizza è quel lieve senso di surreale che mi accompagna sempre, anche nella vita reale!

WHY DO I WRITE WHAT I DO?

I haven’t  choose to write stories with images but they’ ve rather arrived with images already. My wish and will  to deeply explore the visual land through drawing, painting or sculpting made my words dry as most of the adjectives and sometimes substantives( or even characters and situations) have been transferred into the illustrations. But even if sometimes  the words in my books are just a few they always remain to dialogue with the images. I've never done silent books till now.

PERCHE’ SCRIVO QUEL CHE SCRIVO?

Non ho scelto di scrivere storie con le immagini, semplicemente le storie mi sono sempre arrivate in maniera più o meno diretta già fornite di immagini. La mia  voglia e volontà di esplorare sempre più in profondità il territorio del visivo tramite il disegno, la pittura e la tridimensione hanno fatto sì che le storie si asciugassero sempre di più dalla forma descrittiva originaria, trasferendo aggettivi e addirittura sostantivi, personaggi e situazioni nelle tavole illustrate. Ma le parole, anche se poche, sono sempre rimaste a dialogare con l’immagine.Non ho mai realizzato libri di sole immagini finora.

HOW DOES MY WRITING PROCESS WORK?

As I told it in several interviews in that last one I’d prefer to explain it with some more concrete samples as the roughs that you saw along my words( all from the book “The Most Beautiful Smile”).

First, there was the Louvre, about 10 years ago. It was the second or maybe third time that I visited it. But this time I was alone with my sketchbook and I had plenty of time to wander around. So I had the time to sketch out all the details of the paintings that I liked most and that in the reproduction of books I haven’t noticed before.

After this Parisian tour I came back in Strasbourg where I was in a friend’s house for a while and I showed them my sketches. They laughed when they discovered that the half of the book was occupied by drawing of people that where pushing each other in order to get a closer look to the far away Monnalisa, well protected behind her glass.

Second, I've worked out these suggestions putting in my place a little country Mouse who decided to move in a newest and bigger house. He had heard that in the house a mysterious woman was living  and that her smile was the most beautiful in the world.

We discovered that the story is entirely set into the Louvre just at the end of the book when the  very tired Little Mouse  who had run back and forth in order to find the woman with the Most Beautiful Smile finally caught  sleep right in front of her.

Of course to get to the finished book I moved forward several versions of the story and roughs. Afterwards I've juxtaposed text and images.I cut here and there and I finally got to the final version. Only at this point I've started to work at the illustrations with colors.

COME FUNZIONA IL MIO PROCESSO CREATIVO?

L’ho raccontato in diverse interviste e in quest’ultima mi piacerebbe spiegarlo con qualche esempio un po’ più concreto, utilizzando gli schizzi che avete visto scorrere sopra e che raccontano il processo creativo del libro “The Most Beautiful Smile”.

Per prima cosa c’è stato il Louvre, circa 10 anni fa. Era la seconda o forse la terza volta che ci andavo. Ma questa volta ero sola e avevo un sacco di tempo per vagare, scoprire e ammirare. Avevo con me un blocco su cui stavo schizzando dettagli dei dipinti che mi avevano colpito e che nelle riproduzioni di solito non si vedono molto bene. 

Quando sono ritornata a Strasburgo dove ero per un periodo a casa di amici disegnatori e ho mostrato le “cartoline” del mio soggiorno parigino loro sono scoppiati a ridere nel vedere che più della metà degli schizzi rappresentavano le diverse angolazioni con cui le persone che si accalcavano, storcendo il collo, fotografando, pestandosi i piedi e spalancando le bocche di fronte al dipinto della Gioconda , lontana dietro il suo vetro .

Rielaborando questa suggestione e mettendo al mio posto un topolino di campagna che si sente solo e ha deciso di trasferirsi nella casa in cui vive la dama dal più bel sorriso del mondo, è nato questo libro che racconta il Louvre attraverso i suoi capolavori e svela solo alla fine chi siano quegli abitanti misteriosi.

Naturalmente per arrivare al libro finito sono passata attraverso diverse fasi di rielaborazioni dei primi schizzi e diverse riscritture della prima idea. Poi accostando testo e immagini ho deciso cosa raccontare con le parole e cosa con le immagini.

SilviaSantirosi from Paris: Silvia Santirosi è giornalista e scrittrice. Ha collaborato con L'Unità, Il Mattino, Via Pò e Andersen. Ora si occupa di fumetti per L'Espresso (in Italia) e per dBD (in Francia). Anima da gennaio un blog dedicato alla letteratura per ragazzi, Passepartout.

Ha pubblicato racconti in diverse riviste, un libro di poesie (Istantanee, Edilet 2008), due albi per bambini (Il treno – illustrato da Chiara Carrer, Logos 2012 e Capitan Barbabrizzola. Un naso da salvare – illustrato da Simone Rea, Anicia ragazzi, 2012). Il prossimo albo illustrato, Chi sono io, uscirà a giugno per Kite edizioni. Attualmente lavora al suo primo romanzo.

CristinaBiazetto from Porto Alegre, Brazil: Cristina is a children's books illustrator and writer.

She was delighted in transforming the writers' words in  lines, shapes and colors. This enchantment has grown immensely when she started illustrating her own texts. 
Passionate about reading, Cristina spends most of her free time devouring not only literature books, but also philosophy, history and psychology ones. 
Part of her work is to visit schools and literary events, where she talk's with children about her books.

and Morteza Zahedi from Teheran, Iran: Morteza Zahedi Born in Rasht (1978) Lives and works in Tehran in Iran Painter,Illustrator and sculptor, Morteza Zahedi was born on March 31,1978 in Rasht, one of the most charming northern cities of Iran,he Lives and works in Tehran nowadays.He graduated from Graphic School,1995 and B.A in Painting / Graduated from Art and Artitecture College,Tehran,2001 ,his works have been on solo exhibitions in many countries. He is also the fine illustrator of several children’s books that have been translated in more than 5 languages.At the Bologna Book Fair his illustrations have been exhibited in 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2009. He taught illustration at personal studio in Tehran of 2005 till now
